Academics
The program follows the bi-semester system.Summer session may be offered based on the decision of the program committee.
Ph.D. students take up to 9 courses, about half of which are spent acquiring the core analytic tools of the profession (microeconomics, macroeconomics, and quantitative methods). All Ph.D. students must complete a doctoral dissertation (thesis).
Requirements
The graduating students must meet the following criteria:
(1) Complete all courses required by the curriculum with at least 3.00 grade point average (GPA).

(2) Pass the foreign language test as required by the Graduate School.
(3) Pass the Qualifying Examination.
Students must pass a qualifying examination in both microeconomics and macroeconomics, which will be held at the beginning of the summer and at the beginning of the first semester. Students have 2 attempts to take the qualifying examination. Failing may result in termination from the Ph.D. program.
(4) Pass the dissertation proposal, present the dissertation, and pass the dissertation defense with the dissertation committee. The dissertation, or a section of it, must be published or be accepted for publication in a recognized peer-reviewed journal.
To be eligible to register for dissertation credits, students must
(a) Pass all required courses and have the cumulative credit at least 24 credits for students who have a Master’s degree or 30 credits for students who have a Bachelor’s degree.
(b) Have at least 3.00 GPA.
(c) Pass the Qualifying Examination.
(d) Receive “Pass” in the dissertation proposal.
(e) Receive approval from the dissertation advisor.
